Milena Pavlović Barilli, painter, poet, set designer, illustrator and a precursor of modern multimedia artists stands in the centre of this production.
The production of A Dream of Milena is the result of many months of theatre documentary research of this painter’s biography, but in the context of socio-political concept of the period between the two wars during 20th century that she lived through, and a theatrical research of language and form of the production in the context of personal artistic aesthetics of Milena Pavlović Barilli.
The dramatic matrix of the production is made up of letters, critiques, diary entries, analytical texts, her own poetry but also the poetic annotations of Jelena Bogavac and Miodrag Kovačević based on the biographical documents belonging to the Pavlović Barilli family.
The production aims to define the watershed moments in the life of Milena Pavlović Barilli, observed from the perspective of her masterpieces – hence why the language of symbols in her art is used in this production to talk about Milena.
This video installation is formulated in such a manner to include a number of reproductions as well as scans of documents and letters that belonged to the artist.
The lifelong, emotionally rational and perceptive ups and downs in the career of this renowned artist are examined in view of adopting a new approach to the eternal subject of the course of an artist’s life or indeed the course of art itself – the search, the realisation, a life conditioned by market demands, the tragedy of historical events, personal universe, political autism, the clash between the local and the global, interdependence of the personal and the collective.
