Rehearsals for the play A Member of the Parliament by Branislav Nušić, directed by Vito Taufer, started at the Yugoslav Drama Theatre today.
The play features Dragan Mićanović, Sloboda Mićalović, Srđan Timarov, Nataša Ninković, Miodrag Dragičević, Aleksandar Đurica, Anđelika Simić, Goran Šušljik, Zoran Cvijanović, Marta Bogosavljević, Lazar Đukić and Lazar Nikolić.
Vesna Radovanović is the dramaturg, Lazar Bodroža is the scenographer, Suna Kažić is the costume designer, Šimun Matišić is the composer, and the stage speech will be shaped by Ljiljana Mrkić Popović.
It has been 35 years since the previous, famous and very popular staging of A Member of the Parliament at the YDT. The cast of the play directed by the legendary Dejan Mijač also included, among others, Mihailo Janketić, Đurđija Cvetić, Vesna Trivalić, Branko Cvejić and Jelisaveta Sablić.
A Member of the Parliament was Nušić’s first comedy. Although written towards the end of the 19th century, the characters and events can be set in any time, even in today’s world. Nušić depicts petty bourgeois eager for power in a comic manner. And each of them has their own reason – one wants a position because of social prestige, another has only money on their mind, and another is hungry for power… In a race for power, there are no positive characters – each and every one of them are negative, seeking power purely for themselves, not for the sake of the state or (God forbid) for the sake of the people.
This is Vito Taufer’s second direction at the Yugoslav Drama Theatre. A Member of the Parliament comes after the play Oedipus, which has been staged with a great success several seasons already.
The premiere is scheduled for December.
