The play The Tin Drum inspired by Günter Grass’s novel of the same name, directed by Vasil Hristov, will open the MOT International Theatre Festival in Skopje (North Macedonia) on Wednesday, November 19th. This will be the 50th anniversary of the festival.

As one of the most important novels of the 20th century, the novel that pushed the boundaries of literature and based on which Volker Schlöndorff made a famous movie in 1979, Günter Grass’s The Tin Drum brings us a saga about Oskar Matzerath, a 30-year-old patient at a psychiatric institution, who, at the age of three, resolved to stop growing – all that on the eve of the rise of Nazism and the beginning of the Second World War. Protesting against adults, Oskar comments on historical developments from the perspective of a child, painting a picture of the world hurtling towards self-destruction.

The play that had its premiere performance in December 2023 features Miodrag Dragičević, Jovana Belović, Marko Janketić, Joakim Tasić, Iva Manojlović, Lazar Đukić, Tamara Šustić and Teodor Vinčić. The text was adapted by Vasil Hristov, Vesna Radovanović is the dramaturg, Kostantin Trpenoski (mvv.design) is the scenographer, Marija Marković Milojev is the costume designer, Nikola Kodžabašija is the composer, and the stage speech was shaped by Ljiljana Mrkić Popović.

The Internation Theatre Festival MOT is one of the oldest and most distinguished theatre festivals in Macedonia. Established in 1976, MOT has grown into a recognizable cultural brand – a symbol of the contemporary theatre and the platform where the local audience has a rare opportunity to experience the most significant currents of the European and world stages.
