Rehearsals began today at the Yugoslav Drama Theatre for the new production of Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare, directed by András Urbán. This is also Urbán’s first production for the YDT.
The cast includes Goran Šušljik, Anđelika Simić, Lazar Đukić, Jovana Belović, Joakim Tasić, Dragan Sekulić, Veljko Stevanović, Luka Sević, Luka Antonijević and Petar Petrović. Text adaptation by Vedrana Božinović, set desgn by András Urbán, costume design by Lina Leković, original score by Irena Popović Dragović with Ljiljana Mrkić Popović in charge of speech coaching.
Titus Andronicus is believed to be Shakespeare’s first tragedy. It is also his most brutal and bloodiest play believed to have been written as Shakespeare’s attempt at “revenge tragedy“ which was extremely popular at the time. The text went far beyond the scope of revenge tragedy and became the first glimpse of Shakespeare’s genius.
The production is scheduled to open in December.
