OEDIPUS AT THEATRE FESTIVAL IN BUDAPEST

The Yugoslav Drama Theatre is taking part in the 10th edition of the MITEM International theatre festival in Budapest with the production of Oedipus, directed by Vito Taufer.

This year’s edition of this renowned festival began on 30th September and will continue until 23rd October at the National Theatre in Budapest. In addition to the Yugoslav Drama Theatre, the only participant from Serbia at this year’s MITEM, there are also productions from France, Germany, Hungary, Romania, Czechia, Slovakia…. The performance of Oedipus is scheduled for Thursday, 12th October.

MITEM – Madách International Theatre Meeting (named after the renowned Hungarian author Imre Madách) is, in fact, a continuation and final stage of 10th edition of the International Theatre Olympics held during the first half of this year in several cities around Hungary. During the ten years of its existence, productions from around fifty different countries have taken part in MITEM with productions from 12 different countries in this year’s edition. The YDT production of Oedipus will be performed in the MITEM Plus category, together with Le Tartuffe by La Comedie Française in Paris and Hamlet by the National Theatre in Košice.

The cast of this tragedy of Oedipus by Sophocles includes Milan Marić, Nataša Ninković, Srđan Timarov, Bojan Dimitrijević, Aleksandar Đurica, Miloš Samolov, Nebojša Ljubišić, Zoran Cvijanović, Joakim Tasić, Milan Bobić, Luka Antonijević, Luka Sević and Veljko Stevanović. Since it opened on 17th September, 2022, Oedipus has had 31 performances at the YDT. So far, more than 19,000 spectators have enjoyed this production and tickets for three to four performances scheduled every month were normally sold out as soon as they became available.

In November, 2022 there was a guest performance of Oedipus at the Slovene National Theatre Drama, two guest performances at the ZYT in Zagreb earlier in June this year with another guest performance towards the end of that same month at the Serbian National Theatre in Novi Sad. The tickets for all guest performances were sold out days ahead of the actual performances and the cast received standing ovations before packed houses, just as it happened after every performance at the YDT.

The cast of the production are joined by musicians Đorđe Denić (vocals), Darko Golić (double bass) and Luka Lopičić (accordeon). Text adapted by Vesna Radovanović and Marko Manojlović, set design by Lazar Bodroža, costume design by Marija Marković Milojev, with orignal music composed by Robert Pešut – Magnifico and Aleksander Pešut – Schatz!.
