Two guest performances of Oedipus by Sophocles, directed by the Slovenian director Vito Taufer, are scheduled for Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd January at the Muhsin Erturul theatre in Istanbul (Türkiye).
The city theatre where the two YDT guest performaces will be given (Harbiye Muhsin Ertuğrul Sahnesi) was named after the renowned Turkish actor and director Muhsin Ertuğrul (1892-1979). The theatre first opened in 1964 and a new theatre building was constructed on the same site where the old theatre stood which in the meantime had been partially demolished.
During the course of last year, Oedipus took part in the tenth International theatre festival MITEM in Budapest, had guest performances at the ZYT in Zagreb, Serbian National Theatre in Novi Sad, 28th Without Translation festival of Yugoslav theatre in Užice and on the stage of the Slovene National Theatre Drama in Ljubljana. The tickets for all guest performances were sold out days ahead of the actual performances and the cast received standing ovations before packed houses, just as it happened after every performance at the YDT.
The cast of this tragedy of Oedipus by Sophocles includes Milan Marić, Nataša Ninković, Srđan Timarov, Bojan Dimitrijević, Aleksandar Đurica, Miloš Samolov, Nebojša Ljubišić, Zoran Cvijanović, Joakim Tasić, Milan Bobić, Luka Antonijević, Luka Sević and Veljko Stevanović. Since it opened on 17th September, 2022, Oedipus has had 40 performances at the YDT. So far, more than 22,000 spectators have enjoyed this production and tickets for three to four performances scheduled every month were normally sold out as soon as they became available.
