TWO PERFORMANCES OF OEDIPUS IN ZAGREB

Two guest performances of Oedipus, directed by Vito Taufer, are scheduled for 1st and 2nd June on the stage of the Zagreb Youth Theatre. Tickets for both performances were sold out as early as last week.

The cast of this tragedy by Sophocles includes Milan Marić, Nataša Ninković, Srđan Timarov, Bojan Dimitrijević, Aleksandar Đurica, Miloš Samolov, Nebojša Ljubišić, Zoran Cvijanović, Joakim Tasić, Milan Bobić, Luka Antonijević, Luka Sević and Veljko Stevanović. Musicians Marko Radojević (singer), Darko Golić (double bass) and Luka Lopičić (accordeon). Text adapted by Vesna Radovanović and Marko Manojlović, set design by Lazar Bodroža, costume design by Marija Marković Milojev, with orignal music composed by Robert Pešut – Magnifico and Aleksander Pešut – Schatz!.

Since it opened on 17th September, the production has had 29 performances on the Yugoslav Drama Theatre stage to full houses and standing ovations. More than 17,000 tickets have been sold for this production with three to four performances per month and they are usually sold out in a matter of hours. In November, the ensemble of Oedipus received standing ovations before a full house of the Slovene National Theatre – Drama in Ljubljana.

For his portrayal of the title role of Oedipus, Milan Marić has received the City of Belgrade Award for contribution to drama in 2022. The visitors to Kinopolis web portal have voted it the best production of 2022 and Milan Marić and Nataša Ninković were voted best actors. On the best theatre productions of the year list by the Politika daily, Oedipus ranked 5th and according to the critics of the Večernje Novosti daily it was one of the five must-see productions of 2022.

The Yugoslav Drama Theatre Annual Awards went to director Vito Taufer and actors Milan Marić, Nataša Ninković and Marko Radojević. The Branivoj Đorđević award for diction went to Milan Marić who also received the Branka and Mlađa Veselinović award for best actor in a Yugoslav Drama Theatre production in 2022. The Nebojša Glogovac Award for outstanding artistic creation by a young actor went to Joakim Tasić for his portrayal of court Messenger in Oedipus and Saturninus in Titus Andronicus.

The last guest performance of a Yugoslav Drama Theatre production at the ZYT was in December 2019 with Lorenzaccio and the guest performance by ZYT of Pansion Eden, scheduled for March 2020 had to be cancelled due to the pandemic outbreak.

The YDT had a guest performance in Zagreb last year at the Croatian National Theatre with The Travelling Troupe Šopalović by Ljubomir Simović, directed by Jagoš Marković.
