After two very successful performances of Oedipus in Porto earlier this month, the São João National Theatre will have a chance to perform before Belgrade audiences on Monday, 4th November at 7pm. The theatre from Portugal will give a performance on the stage of the Yugoslav Drama Theatre of The Crucible by Arthur Miller, directed by the NT’s artistic director Nuno Cardoso.
The São João National Theatre is one of the most important theatres in Portugal and is also a member of the Union of Theatres in Europe.
Nuno Cardoso has directed numerous productions based on works by playwrights such as Sophocles, Aeschylus, Racine, Molière, Chekhov, Ibsen, Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Williams, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Sarah Kane, Lars Norén, Marius von Mayenburg… Cardoso’s productions of plays by Chekhov (Platonov, The Seagull, Three Sisters) and Shakespeare (Richard III, Measure for Measure, Coriolanus, Timon of Athens, King Lear) have been particularly seminal. The Público daily described Platonov as the theatre production of 2008 and Cardoso received a special award from the Portuguese Association of Theatre Critics. The production of Demons by Lars Norén received an award from the Portuguese Society of Authors in 2016 in the best production category. Nuno Cardoso has served as the artistic director of the São João National Theatre since 2019.
In addition to the recent guest performances in Porto, the Yugoslav Drama Theatre has already had an opportunity to give a guest performance on the stage of the National Theatre in Porto with the production of Fires by Maria Velasco, based on a prose work by Marguerite Yourcenar and directed by Carme Portaceli as part of the Finisterre festival held last year under the aegis of the Union of Theatres in Europe.
